Dartmouth pushes to publish results of clinical trials

Dartmouth College is backing an effort to publish more information about clinical trials and their results.

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice this week became the first U.S. academic institutions to join the AllTrials Campaign, which was launched this year in the United Kingdom and calls for all clinical trials to be registered and their results reported.

Dr. Elliott Fisher, director of the Dartmouth Institute in Hanover, said the goal is to help doctors, patients and the public make wise decisions about health and health care. He urged other academic medical centers to join the effort, and said biased, selective or non-publication of clinical trials violates the public trust and undermines the ability to understand the effects of tests and treatments.
