The Insiders: We find your lack of faith disturbing

The mantra on everyone’s lips today should sound vaguely familiar: “May the Fourth be with you.” On the surface, it seems like a polite, albeit unusual, way to greet people on this date (which just so happens to fall between the two Insiders’ birthdays!). Let your lips’ lisp lapse, however, and you’ll get to the root of it – it’s a Star Wars thing! Just like Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru took in a young Luke Skywalker, so too have Star Wars fans adopted May 4 as the official day to celebrate all things Jedi. This year, Red River Theatres is getting in on the action – and the schedule is more jam-packed than a set by the Mos Eisley Cantina band (Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes are considered by many to be the Phish of Tattooine). From 4 to 6 p.m., the event is fully family-friendly. Bring your little Siths in for Jedi training, do some galactic crafts (to be hung on a refrigerator far, far away), take part in the costume contest, check out the fan film fest and rub white plastic elbows with a platoon of stormtroopers.
Then, make the Kessel run back to your house (in less than 12 parsecs, ideally), drop off the kids and return by 6:30 p.m. for the rest of the festivities. In trivia, partake you will; there’s also yet another costume contest (this is where the Slave Leias really shine). Finally, wrap up the night by watching a screening of Hidden Fortress, the Akira Kurosawa classic that George Lucas admittedly “totally ripped off” (okay, we may have that quote slightly wrong). It’s like Star Wars without all that dumb space stuff! Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for children. Anyone bringing up Episodes 1-3 or the looming Episode 7 will be promptly fed to the Sarlacc. Elsewhere, Concord Pilates celebrates its new 2½ Beacon St. location with Pilates Day! The event takes place from noon to 3 p.m. To register or for more information, visit concordpilates.com or call 568-7190.
