Sanbornton voters again reject SB 2 proposal

Sanbornton voters have once again blocked an effort to replace their traditional town meeting with the newer SB 2 style.

Residents voted, 352-335, yesterday against implementing SB 2, which separates discussion and voting on warrant articles. The petitioned ballot measure needed a 60 percent majority to pass – it received 49 percent, said Town Clerk Jane Goss. The town has voted down the change numerous times in the past. Proponents claim it would increase voter turnout, opponents contend it will result in a less informed electorate.

Selectmen Chairman David Nickerson also narrowly came out on top yesterday in his race against town moderator and former selectwoman Patsy Wells, who had been vying for his seat. Nickerson received 348 votes to Wells’s 316.
