Report to Readers: Three good reads: guns, casinos and amputees

If you’re hunkered down inside this weekend, trying to stay out of the heat, here are three good reads for you:

1. Former Monitor reporter Chelsea Conaboy, now a journalist at the Boston Globe, had a riveting front-page story this week about a former University of New Hampshire football player who lost his legs in a crash but now serves as an inspiration to others.

2. Last Sunday’s Viewpoints section was dominated by a column about the UNH logo flap. But down at the bottom of the page was a thoughtful essay by Jonathan P. Baird of Wilmot about how some common-sense gun laws in New Hampshire have made a real difference in cases of domestic violence.

3. On a trip to Ohio last week, I read a story in the Cleveland Plain Dealer about an aspect to the casino gambling debate that hadn’t yet surfaced in New Hampshire: concern among higher education officials about the gambling industry preying on college students.

Food for thought.
