Franklin officials rescue woman trapped on island

Franklin fire officials rescued an unidentified woman Thursday night, using a personal flotation device and ground ladder to get her off an island on the Winnipesaukee River.

The Franklin police and the New Hampshire Marine Patrol assisted in the rescue, officials said, adding that the woman and a man had been on a raft when rough conditions caused them to fall into the river at 7:30 p.m. The man made it to shore.

Franklin fire officials said the pair suffered scrapes, bruises and mild hypothermia.

“They were lucky to get out of the water with minor injuries,” Captain Jason Jenkins of the Franklin Fire Department said in a statement. “The water levels are extremely high with the recent rain, and neither party was wearing a life jacket.”
