Registration still open for Mt. Washington race
Registration is open until Tuesday for a bicycle race up the Mount Washington Auto Road.
Newton’s Revenge is scheduled for July 6, with July 7 as the rain date.
To reach the summit, which is 6,288 feet above sea level, competitors will gain 4,560 feet of altitude while battling gravity and unpredictable winds on the 7.6-mile course. More than 150 cyclists have registered so far; in event typically draws between 250 and 350 riders.
The race was created in 2006 as a response to
growing demand for opportunities to ride a bicycle up the Auto Road. The Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb, scheduled for Aug. 17, has 635 cyclists listed for the event, the maximum allowed.
One of the most admired contenders in the race is 14-year-old Jonah Thompson of Albuquerque, N.M. Thompson first raced up Mount Washington at the age of 9. In 2012, he finished 38th overall out of 201 riders to complete the course up the highest peak in the northeastern United States.
