Henniker blues concert to benefit Boston Marathon bombing survivors

Dr. Dann and the Off Mission Blues Band has a new mission: to raise money for those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings.

The electric Chicago-style blues band is holding a benefit concert for the survivors July 27. The show will kick off at 8 p.m. at Daniels Restaurant and Pub in Henniker, and its proceeds will go toward The One Fund Boston.

Paul Dann, the band leader who plays lead guitar and sings, said the band cherished the opportunity to do something they love and help others at the same time. The rest of the band is composed of Davis Dann of New York City, who plays rhythm and lead guitar; Joe Quinn of Haverhill, Mass., who plays keyboard and sings; and John Bassi of Concord, who plays drums.

Paul Dann spoke with the Monitor yesterday about the upcoming event.

Why did you decide to hold a benefit concert for the bombing victims? When we heard about the tragedy in Boston, we just felt as a group we wanted to do something to provide some help and support. We love to play our music and we thought this would be a wonderful way

to do something helpful for the survivors of the bomb and their families, and also to have some fun, too, to play some music and get some people out to enjoy it.

Have you played charity concerts before? Yeah, we did one about 18 months ago for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. From time to time if there’s an important cause out there that touches us, we want to get involved and help out.

Where will the proceeds come from? There’s a suggested $10 donation for a ticket and the ticket gets admission to the show.

(Attendees) can reserve them in advance if they want to, just send an email to dannclan@comcast.net. Or there will be tickets at the door, too.

How long have you guys been playing together? Oh, a long time. My brother’s in the band and he and I have been playing together for 40 years, so that makes us sound ancient. Some of the other guys have been the last 10 to 15 years playing together.

Locally, we play for the Concord Co-op for some of their events. And we’re a regular at the Maine Blues Festival.

We’ve had about five gigs this summer. The next one we’ll have locally after this one will be at the Contoocook music in the park, we’ll be there August 25.

Have you played at Daniels Restaurant and Pub before? This will be our first time. They have great music there, and it’s a great venue. It overlooks the river and it’s got sort of an open porch type setting looking out over the river. It’s a nice spot to play.

They’re very collaborative with us for the fundraiser. They’re going to man the door and handle the cash bar and give us the space. It’s really no cost, so all the proceeds are going to be able to go right to the fund.
