The Concord police are soliciting information that could help identify a “badly” decomposed body recovered early yesterday morning in the woods along Route 106, near the entrance to the Walmart access road.

The find was reported to the state police about 4:30 a.m. by someone who had been walking in the area, said Concord police Lt. Timothy O’Malley. O’Malley described the area as criss-crossed by footpaths and near some homeless camps, though nothing at this point indicates those are connected to the death.

O’Malley would not specify the physical state of the body, but he said it was decomposed to the point that officials could not determine its gender. Based on a preliminary examination, the person had short dark hair – possibly an overgrown buzz cut – and was wearing dark jeans, a gray T-shirt and an olive-green fleece, O’Malley said.

No cause of death had been determined yesterday. An autopsy is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow.

The corpse was found about 80 feet from the northbound side of Route 106. Based on humid summer weather conditions, it had likely been there for one to two months, O’Malley said. He noted that detectives were looking into whether there had been a delay between the time the body was discovered and when it was reported.

O’Malley said he was unaware of any recent missing persons reports or other criminal activity that may shed light on the find.

“We’re really at a loss for who this person was,” he said.

Authorities are looking for any information from the public that might help identify the body, and they’re especially interested in reports of people who went missing or were last seen in July or August.

Anyone with information can call the Concord police at 225-8600 or the Concord Regional Crimeline at 226-3100.
