The race conditions for the 37th annual Capital Area Cross Country Championship couldn’t have been much more different than they were the year before, but the competition, and luckily for the Concord girls’ cross country team, the results stayed the same.

The Tide maintained local cross country supremacy by defending its title (it now has 21 in school history) and Concord’s Smita Boesch-Dining defended her individual crown, winning with a time of 20:19 – 10 seconds faster than the course record she set last year. Hopkinton’s Dom Repucci pulled away from the pack with under a mile to go to win the boys’ race with a time of 17:21, and St. Paul’s won the boys’ team title for the first time since 2008.

Boesch-Dining led the race from the starting gun and beat runner-up Sarah Nadeau (20:48) of Hopkinton by 29 seconds. Fellow Tide runners Cassie Shea (20:55) and Erin Waters (21:07) finished third and fourth, respectively, while Hopkinton’s Maddie Clark (21:18) rounded out the top five. On the boys’ side Concord’s Pepper Smith (17:34) was second, then St. Paul’s runner Jack Evenson, Drew Tuttle and Mike Fife (both of Prospect Mountain) finished third through fifth with identical times of 17:40.

After winning in the pouring rain and whipping winds on a muddy course last year, the warm temperatures, sun and dry conditions suited Boesch-Dining just fine.

“It was interesting to see, especially the big hill, without being muddy,” said Boesch-Dining, adding that yesterday’s heat made mental toughness important when tackling the most challenging part of Merrimack Valley’s relatively flat home course. “I think our girls did a really good job of getting over that mental aspect of it and just staying positive.”

As for the team results, the Tide girls showed off both their talent and depth, placing eight runners in the top 12 and 10 runners in the top 21 to post a low score of 22 points, easily beating second-place Hopkinton (72), which narrowly topped rival Bow (79). John Stark (fourth, 133) and St. Paul’s (fifth, 147) rounded out the top five in the 11-team field, which also included Kearsarge (sixth, 173), Pembroke (seventh, 192), MV (eighth, 195), Prospect Mountain (ninth, 212), Bishop Brady (10th, 232), Winnisquam (11th, 310) and Sant Bani (no score).

“We definitely try to stick together and it’s nice to have a group of us in the front and then a middle pack,” Boesch-Dining said. “That was our coach’s goal for us. ... We’ve become a really strong team, and we keep each other positive.”

Concord girls’ Coach Lyn Vinskus also attributed the pack-running mentality as a key factor to the Tide’s success.

“It was nice to see little clumps of crimson along the way,” said Vinskus, noting that Shea and Waters have been gaining on Boesch-Dining. “We don’t have Smita and then two minutes and then somebody and a minute and then somebody else. We have Smita and then a pack. ... It just pushes other teams back, it means keeping our score on the lower side.”

Also in Concord’s leading pack were Kate Andy (sixth, 21:33), Samantha Pearl (eighth, 21:44), Kaelin Willette (ninth, 21:51), Michaella Conery (10th, 21:53) and Kayli O’Donnell (12th, 21:55). Nadeau, Clark, Emily Calder (13th, 21:56), Katie Irwin (15th, 22:03) and Melissa Irwin (51st, 25:11) scored for runner-up Hopkinton.

Bow was led by Olivia Krause (seventh, 21:35), Sohani Demian (16th, 22:07), Allie Krause (18th, 22:26), Hannah Weckstein (22nd, 22:54) and Ashlie Tucker (24th, 23:06), while John Stark was led by Hazel Johnstone (11th, 21:54), Madeline Ishak (14th, 22:01), Hailey Nase (17th, 22:11), Hannah Erskine (49th, 25:10) and Erin Scott (76th, 27:41).

Other top local runners included Briggie Carr (29th, 23:35), Anna Cahill (35th, 24:00) and Annie Carr (50th, 25:10) for Kearsarge; Mariah Mitchell (31st, 23:40), Nicole Pearl (38th, 24:18) and Alison Fischer (39th, 24:19) for Pembroke; Raquel Gelinas (23rd, 23:00) and Cassie Owens (26th, 23:28) for MV; Devyn Saucier (44th, 24:26) and Lauren Lamberger (62nd, 26:38) for Bishop Brady; Tea Michaloski (60th, 26:15) and Allyson McGuire (79th, 28:03) for Winnisquam; and Joyce Hamel (25th, 23:27) and Sarah Steenbergen (30th, 23:37) for Sant Bani.

The St. Paul’s boys also utilized a pack-running strategy, placing six runners in the top 16 to claim its first team title since 2008. The Big Red posted a winning score of 52 points. Prospect Mountain upset host MV, topping the Pride, 78-92, for second place. Concord (140) finished fourth and Bow narrowly beat Division III rival Hopkinton, 151-155, for fifth place. Pembroke (seventh, 197), Bishop Brady (ninth, 217), Kearsarge (10th, 248) and Winnisquam (12th, 304) completed the 12-team field. John Stark and Sant Bani did not have enough runners for a team score.

“Our guys have finished within 35-45 seconds of each other, first through sixth, and so that is essentially our strength,” St. Paul’s Coach Toby Brewster said. “And while we may not have an individual winner, that pack strength has really helped us.”

Since the Big Red doesn’t compete against local public high schools very often, the team took the race with a great deal of enthusiasm.

“It’s one of the two times of the year that we get to see some of the best athletes and it’s really exciting to be in a place when we can meet together with these very talented area teams,” Brewster said.

St. Paul’s captain Max Felix (15th, 18:27) echoed his coach’s sentiment.

“It means a lot. ... We’re a part of the Concord community, so just racing teams that we respect is always good,” said Felix, adding that “we came in second last year, so we had high expectations.”

Jack Evenson (third, 17:40), Marc Roy (eighth, 17:47), Max Abram (12th, 18:19), Charlie Thompson (14th, 18:22), Felix and Reid Noch (16th, 18:29) were all in the St. Paul’s pack up front, while Paul Kigawa (31st, 19:29) was also a scoring runner.

The mix of teams from public and private schools from several divisions made for a great stage, and champion Repucci, only a sophomore, knew what he would be up against.

“There was some good competition. I’ll be looking to go faster at the state meet next week, but overall it was pretty good,” he said. “I would have liked to have been sub 17, but I’m pretty happy with the victory. A lot of great teams and runners are showing up, and I just want to commend everyone else for their great work today.”

MV’s scoring runners were Brendan Polichronopoulos (10th, 17:52), Keegan Hanks (13th, 18:21), Walker John (20th, 18:38), Carter Saltmarsh (22nd, 18:53), Brandon Richardson (27th, 19:17), Damon Perron (29th, 19:25) and Trevor Parsons (30th, 19:27) .

Concord was led by Smith (second, 17:34), Alex Saveliev (18th, 18:31), Michael Alexander (36th, 19:47), Calgary Mackenzie (39th, 19:58) and Brad Hicks (46th, 20:06), while Bow was led by Peter Lariviere (19th, 18:32), Andrew Attorri (23rd, 18:55), Zach Zbehlik (24th, 18:56), Hayden Udelson (42nd, 20:02) and Jacob Proulx (44th, 20:04).

Cody Roberge (32nd, 19:31), Peter Sawitsky (35th, 19:46), Declan Campbell (41st, 20:01) and Chris Barnard (47th, 20:09) joined Repucci as the other Hopkinton scorers.

Other top runners included John Sanborn (11th, 18:11), Kam Anderson (33rd, 19:37) and Steven Abbott (37th, 19:54) for Pembroke; Warren Bartlett (sixth, 17:44), Jake Boesch (26th, 19:16) and Stephen Weinmann (40th, 20:00) for Bishop Brady; Shane Corley (17th, 18:30), William Astle (55th, 20:29) and Carter Noordsij (60th, 20:43) for Kearsarge; and Michael Roy (21st, 18:53) and Zachary Baker (48th, 20:10) for Winnisquam.

Top finishers on non-scoring teams included Robert Kram (59th, 20:40) and Joseph Boucher (77th, 21:38) for John Stark, and Giacomo Dario (66th, 21:02) and Nathan Houghton (82nd, 21:51) for Sant Bani.

The meet concludes the regular season for all area cross country teams. The teams will compete next Saturday in the Division I, II and III state championships at Derryfield Park in Manchester.
