St. Thomas loss puts MV into postseason
Now it’s official. With St. Thomas losing to Trinity last night, 43-28, the Merrimack Valley football team will be making its first playoff appearance in the 12-year history of the program.
The Pride (7-1) still has one regular season game left, today against Plymouth (7-1), but MV is now locked into the No. 2 spot in Division II East and will play at Portsmouth (8-1) next Saturday in the conference championship/D-II quarterfinals.
MV put itself in the driver’s seat for the second D-II East playoff spot with last week’s 34-13 win at St. Thomas (6-3), but that win didn’t guarantee the Pride a postseason berth. If the Saints had beaten Trinity, and MV had lost to Plymouth, the Pride might have missed out on the playoffs, depending on how the NHIAA point system played out. But St. Thomas’s loss last night clarified things, and now the Pride knows its season will last at least one more week.
