Prank caller tries to summon jurors to court

A prank caller tried to convince a handful of New Hampshire residents to show up at court Saturday for jury duty.

Carole Alfano, public information officer for the New Hampshire judicial branch, said the prank failed – no one showed up for jury service at any of the state’s courts Saturday.

“It came to the court’s attention last week that someone was making prank calls to jurors, and we only heard of four of them,” Alfano said. “But the court felt that we had looked into it, and we wanted to be sure we were proactive.”

A phone recording and a message on the state’s judicial branch website warned potential jurors of the hoax.

“We have reason to believe that prank phone calls were made to jurors telling them to report for service on Saturday,” the recording stated.

The four people who reported the prank calls did not seem to be related in any way, Alfano said. One said the call mentioned the southern district Hillsborough County Superior Court, but not everyone could remember the court location specifically.

Alfano said she had never dealt with a similar prank before.

“It turned out not to be a big (deal),” she said.
