The Insiders: Build up some excitement for the LEGO League Tournament

Are you just sitting around this morning looking for something different to do?

We all get bored watching the same old Saturday morning cartoons after taking the weekly trip to the recycling center. It’s too cold to do much of anything outside, so why not head over to the 2013 Bishop Brady FIRST LEGO League Tournament. You can see some pretty awesome robots do some pretty awesome things.

The teams, consisting of up to 10 students (ages 9-14) and at least one coach, face real-world engineering challenges by building Lego-based robots to complete a task. And today’s challenge is Nature’s Fury.

The students will come up with solutions to problems that arise due to natural disasters and yes, they will be using Legos. Can you imagine what would happen when a scientifically engineered Lego robot attempts to stop a tornado in its path? The result could be epic.

The event at the high school at 25 Columbus Ave. is free and open to the public and scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

And after that, make your second trip of the day to a local school for all you can eat pizza. Rundlett Middle School is the host for the Concord Capitals Division 13 Cheerleaders fundraiser in their quest for the nationals. The cost is $10, $32 for a family of four. The event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will also feature a raffle and silent auction.
