Icy conditions on 393 blamed for multiple accidents

Interstate 393 was covered with a “sheet of ice,” a state police spokeswoman said last night, leading to a series of traffic accidents involving at least 10 cars near Exit 2.

One minor injury was reported, and the interstate was closed for a significant period of time. The state Department of Transportation sanders had trouble reaching the scene, which was at a standstill, state police Lt. Nicole Armaganian said.

“Most of the accidents involved multiple vehicles,” she said shortly past 6 p.m. “We haven’t even gotten to them all yet.”

Light snow fell in the morning and was followed by sleet and freezing rain during the afternoon, according to the WMUR website.

Armaganian said the first accident was reported about 3:30 p.m., and the state police and emergency medical personnel arrived soon after. “It’s a parking lot,” Armaganian said.

The roadway was scheduled to reopen by 6:30.
