Crews from six towns fought a fire in a metal building in Greenville yesterday just after 5 p.m. at SPK Steel Fabrication, 750 Fitchburg Road. No one was hurt, but the building and its contents were a total loss. SPK owner Sam Kang said the fire started with paint being used to coat the manhole covers made at the plant. He said he and another employee tried to put the fire out but it got too hot, so they went next door to the Country Mile convenience store and called 911. The Country Mile was evacuated for safety because the store has gas pumps. A portion of Fitchburg Road (Route 31) was closed until the fire was brought under control.
