Students from area technical colleges who are training to become full-time firefighters work on a prescribed burn at the Karner Blue Butterfly preserve at the pine barrens near the airport in Concord on Friday, April 25, 2014. Before commercial development around the area, the pine barrens had regular natural fires that prevented the habitat from becoming choked and restored nutrients to the soil. The prescribed burn sought to do the same in order to preserve the habitat of not only the Karner Blue butterfly but also other endangered species who live in the area such as the New England Cottontail rabbit. The burn also served as a training tool for students studying to become firefighters in the area. Overseen by seasoned firefighters, the students controlled the fire and got to become more familiar with how a wildfire acts.

Legacy Comments2

That's interesting - I saw a charred section of median strip on 393 between exit 2 and 3 yesterday. Did their fire somehow "jump" from the pine barrens to this spot?

That was probably from a cigarette thrown from a car. The conditions (until it rained this weekend) have been very dry and windy.
