Scott Brown raises $2 million between April 1 and June 30
U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown has raised roughly $2 million since April 1, a campaign aide confirmed today. That’s an impressive number for a New Hampshire campaign, but less than half of what Brown raised during the same time period in his 2012 re-election campaign in Massachusetts.
The fundraising deadline for federal candidates closed Monday at midnight, but reports aren’t due to the Federal Election Commission until July 15. WMUR first reported the $2 million figure earlier today. The Brown campaign did not share information about how much Brown has spent this quarter or how much cash he has on hand. No other candidates for federal office have released totals.
The $2 million, while a significant total for New Hampshire, is well below the $4.97 million Brown brought in between April 1 and June 30 in 2012. His senate race against Democrat Elizabeth Warren that year was one of the country’s most expensive. Warren raised more than $8 million during the second quarter of 2012, and she has been fundraising on behalf of incumbent U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen this cycle.
Shaheen raised $1.53 million in the first quarter of 2014, giving her nearly $6 million total by the end of March, meaning she’ll have significantly more money than Brown even if her fundraising total for this quarter is lower. During her 2008 campaign, she raised Shaheen raised $1.6 million in the second quarter of 2008, and this election is likely to be more expensive than the 2008 election.
This quarter’s fundraising result is crucial for both of Brown’s Republican primary opponents, Bob Smith and Jim Rubens, as they try to paint themselves as credible alternatives to Brown. Brown has already released several television ads, whereas Rubens and Smith have not produced television ads and are struggling to come close to Brown in polls. Rubens raised just $24,000 in the first quarter of 2014 and Smith raised $187,000.
