DES issues no-swim advisory for Long Pond in Henniker
The state’s Department of Environmental Services has issued a no-swimming advisory for Long Pond in Henniker because officials discovered the presence blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, in the water.
“The whole pond has shown cloudy greenish-blue water,” said a statement issued by the DES yesterday. “Direct contact with the water is discouraged.”
Blue-green algae blooms can produce harmful toxins, but not always. The advisory is a precautionary measure, the statement said, and is not based on a toxin evaluation.
The advisory will remain in place until DES officials determine the water is safe through continued testing. More information on advisories can be found at des.nh.gov under the Beach Inspection Program tab.
