N.H. think tank offers online state-budget game

The New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies wants all you fiscal-policy wonks out there to BYOB — Build Your Own Budget.

The center today unveiled an updated version of the “Budget Calculator” it made two years ago. The game allows anyone with a deep interest in state government to tweak, or overhaul, the budget deal struck last week by House Democrats and Senate Republicans.

Want to allow a single casino to set up shop in the state? Add $80 million in revenue to the general fund over the next biennium. Think the Department of Revenue Administration shouldn’t add auditor positions? Take out $26 million in revenue.

Think school building aid should be fully funded? That’ll be $7.2 million, please. Restoring revenue sharing with towns and cities will cost a cool $50 million, while fully restoring pre-2011 funding for the University System of New Hampshire will set you back $47 million.

As for the actual budget deal that came together last week, it’ll go before the House and Senate tomorrow for a final vote.
