Police: Drugs, alcohol not factors in fatal Epsom crash

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the Sunday morning crash that killed an 18-year-old Epsom man, the state police said.

Allen Field, 18, died about 1 a.m. Sunday after his car hit a tree and landed on its roof on New Rye Road in Epsom. State police Lt. Nicole Armaganian said Epsom Officer Dana Flanders approached Field a short while earlier when he saw the teen parked behind Epsom Central School.

Armaganian said Flanders turned on his spotlight but Field sped away before the officer stopped his cruiser. Flanders then turned on his flashing blue lights but stopped the pursuit and turned off his lights when he lost sight of Field’s car, Armaganian said.

Field crashed a few minutes later, about 2 miles from the school. Armaganian said Flanders came upon the crash site almost immediately after.

While Armaganian said drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash, investigators do think speed contributed. She said toxicology results are pending.

Armaganian said investigators do not know why Field was at the school or why he decided to speed away from Flanders.

A friend who graduated with Field from Pembroke Academy last month said the two planned to swim in a stream near the school that night. He and other friends said they believe Field left the parking lot when the officer approached him because he had received several speeding tickets in the past and had been warned that he could lose his license if he got in trouble with the police again.
