Henniker PTA treasurer charged with embezzlement

The police said a former Henniker School Board member stole from the PTA’s bank account while she was serving as its treasurer.

Shannon Lovejoy, 37, was arrested Tuesday night on a felony charge of embezzlement. Detective Michelle Dandeneau said the PTA reported the possibility of stolen money to the Henniker police Oct. 15.

“It was reported that there was some money missing from the PTA account, and throughout the investigation, we discovered an amount in the excess of $1,000 (missing),” Dandeneau said.

Dandeneau said the police first interviewed Lovejoy the same day the report was made, and she was cooperative. Lovejoy had been elected treasurer of the PTA in June, Dandeneau said, but she believes Lovejoy officially began the job in August.

Lovejoy is accused of taking the money over a period of 21∕2 to 3 months. She turned herself over to the police Tuesday night when Dandeneau called to tell her she would be arrested.

“She was called, and she came to the police department,” Dandeneau said.

Lovejoy faces a felony charge because the amount of money she allegedly stole exceeds $1,000, Dandeneau said, but she would not disclose the exact amount.

Lovejoy, who has two children at Henniker Community School, also has been a member of the Henniker School Board. She resigned from that position in June, claiming the school was not effectively dealing with bullying among its students.

In a May letter announcing her decision to resign, Lovejoy told the board, assistant superintendent and superintendent that she could be a better advocate against bullying as a parent than as a board member.

Dandeneau said Lovejoy’s criminal record includes a violation for disorderly conduct in 2011, but there is no indication she has ever committed a similar crime before now.

Lovejoy declined to comment on the case, and a request for comment to the PTA was not returned. Lovejoy is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 3 in Hillsboro’s district court.
