Concord man found after reported missing near river

A Concord man briefly went missing while swimming in the Merrimack River last night, initiating a search involving the police and fire departments that led to him being found safe downstream, the police said.

The 46-year-old man, whose name was not released yesterday, was swimming by himself near the New Hampshire Technical Institute boat ramp about 6:30 p.m. when a friend
who knew that he was swimming there was unable to locate him, the police said. That friend called the fire department, which responded with two fire trucks and a boat.

The man was located about 6:45 p.m. sitting on the banks a considerable distance south, past the Loudon Road bridge, the police said. He told officials that he was swimming when his hip cramped. He moved to the shore and was unable to swim back.
