A man was shot in the chest outside an Irving gas station in Hooksett early yesterday morning, and two suspects were arrested 40 minutes later after the police said they spotted their minivan driving 100 mph through Salem with its headlights off.

Daniel Grande, 32, of Hooksett, was identified as the victim of the shooting, which took place on West Alive Avenue about 1:45 a.m. yesterday. According to WMUR, investigators believe he was shot in the chest in a car and then went into the gas station for help.

The suspects, a man and a woman, were taken into custody after their Honda Odyssey was pulled over on Interstate 93 in Salem at 2:23 a.m. Orlando Quintana of Lynn, Mass., and the driver, Ana Koufos, 29, of Revere, Mass., were apprehended at gunpoint just south of Exit 1, said Deputy Chief Shawn Patten of the Salem Police Department.

“This wasn’t a random shooting,” Hooksett police Chief Peter Bartlett told the Union Leader. “We believe the victim and suspects had a prior relationship.”

Quintana was arraigned in Hooksett’s district court on a first-degree assault charge yesterday and held on $100,000 bail. Koufus was charged with hindering apprehension and was held on $25,000 bail.

Patten told the Union Leader that a be-on-the-look-out bulletin, or BOLO, was broadcast by Hooksett for the minivan shortly after the shooting.

Quintana has an extensive police record dating back to 1993, the Union Leader reported, including charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a police officer, and numerous violations of parole conditions.

While arguing for a lower bail, Quintana’s appointed public defender, Brooke Belanger, said he has mental health issues that require treatment, according to the Union Leader.

Both Quintana and Koufos have probable cause hearings scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m.
