Woman to plead guilty in Contoocook theft

A Hillsboro woman accused of stealing nearly $20,000 from her former Contoocook employer will plead guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence, said Deputy Merrimack County Attorney Catherine Ruffle, who is prosecuting the case.

As part of the agreement, Theresa Wareing will complete the county’s diversion program and repay the $19,650 she was accused of taking from Excalibur Shelving Systems between November 2011 and July 2012, plus a 17 percent administration fee, Ruffle said. Her prison sentence will be suspended upon both conditions being met.

Ruffle said the agreement has yet to be accepted by a judge and is subject to change. The plea negotiations will resume if Wareing is not accepted into the program.

Ruffle described the agreement as atypical, because defendants who agree to enroll in the diversion program typically do so in exchange for no official charges. In this case, Ruffle said, maintaining one count was important “to alert other potential employers about her history.”
