Woman reaches plea deal in Claremont embezzlement case

The former office manager of a Claremont food business has reached a plea agreement in a case alleging she stole at least $600,000 from the company over several years.

U.S. District Court records say Bonnie Johnson is scheduled to plead guilty to wire fraud Oct. 10 in Concord, and will be sentenced to nearly three years in prison.

Johnson worked for 21 years at the North Country Smokehouse in Claremont, which sells artisanal smoked meats and cheeses.

The Valley News reported between July 2005 and April, court documents say Johnson wrote checks to herself using the owner’s signature stamp, used a company credit card for personal items and tampered with the company’s books to try to cover her tracks.
