New guidance counselor hired

The Hopkinton School District has hired a new guidance counselor to fill the position vacated by Gene Fox, who resigned in July after being charged with assaulting his elderly relative.

Mitch Taranow, who had worked as a guidance counselor at Merrimack Valley High School since 2006, started at Hopkinton Middle High School on Monday. Principal Christopher Kelley said Taranow, who lives in Hopkinton, was selected from 26 applicants in part because he has experience with both middle and high school students.

‘’He is very passionate about the work he does and he wants the best for kids,’’ Kelley said.

Kelley said he took the vacant position as an opportunity to restructure the guidance department. Counselors previously worked with either middle or high school students but now the staff will work with both, allowing them to know the students better by the time the college application process begins, Kelley said.

Fox resigned in July and was paid $35,000 severance by the district. The criminal proceeding against Fox is ongoing; he was indicted on the Class B felony of second-degree assault in July and arraigned on the charge in Hillsborough County Superior Court last week.’
