Defense asks for more time in Laconia fatal crash case

The attorney for a driver accused of crashing into two 14-year-old girls at a crosswalk in Laconia last year, killing one of them, is asking for more time to prepare for the case.

Amy Lafond is facing manslaughter and two alternate counts of negligent homicide in the crash. Prosecutors said the 52-year-old Lafond was speeding and under the influence of prescription drugs. Killed was 14-year-old Lilyanna Johnson. Her friend, 14-year-old Alyssa Miner, was seriously injured.

The Citizen reported jury selection is scheduled for Feb. 3. Defense Attorney Mark Sisti has asked for three more months to review the state’s evidence. He also cites scheduling conflicts.

Belknap County Attorney Melissa Guldbrandsen said she’d be inclined to agree with the request.

A judge is reviewing the request.
