Tomie dePaola is unquestionably the coolest New Hampshire dude we’ve ever heard of whose last name begins with a lowercase letter. He also happens to be an accomplished author and illustrator known for creating more than 200 children’s books. You can decide which is a more prestigious distinction, but you can make the decision while meeting the man himself when he visits the Mill Brook Gallery and Sculpture Garden tonight for an artist’s reception that kicks off a two-month exhibit of his work.

The accurately-titled exhibit, “Tomie dePaola: Paintings, Illustrations and Prints,” features a variety of his most interesting work and will be open until June 23. The artist’s reception this evening begins at 5 and ends at 7:30.

Among the dozens of accolades bestowed upon him
during his career, dePaola took home the 1994 Aesop Prize, which is ranked even higher than the Pulitzer on the official alphabetical list of prizes! He also has sold more than 15 million copies of his books worldwide, though he presumably wasn’t the one physically selling all of them.

If you want a look inside dePaola’s studio that doesn’t come with a b-and-e charge, this is your chance, as the exhibit will feature several illustrations from dePaola’s personal collection that will be for sale during the exhibit only.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment. For more information, visit themillbrookgallery.com or call 226-2046. The Gallery is located at 236 Hopkinton Road.
