Hopkinton to hold ceremony to start construction of new highway garage

A brief ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled to take place this morning for Hopkinton’s new highway garage, which will replace the garage that was destroyed last year in a fire.

Voters approved construction of the $1.3 million facility in March, just five months after rejecting a similar proposal. Since the fire, many of the town’s trucks and road maintenance machines have been stored in a former state maintenance shed near Exit 9 in Warner.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Jim O’Brien said the new facility should be completed by no later than October.

“It feels really good,”
he said of the ground-breaking. “Our highway crew
has been working out of makeshift offices and I think this will be a nice opportunity to see the finish line, reflect on what’s happened and move forward.”

The ground-breaking ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at 250 Public Works Road in Contoocook.
