The Insiders: A rally we hope two out of three readers might find interesting

There’s simply not enough outrage about fractions these days. Is the glass half-full or half-empty? The argument has never really been settled, and frankly we’re shocked more people aren’t pushing for a solution. Alas, perhaps we should all just order a refill and end the whole discussion.

Those who want to stand united with whole numbers will have their opportunity today, though, when a diverse coalition featuring veterans, women’s rights leaders, senators and representatives holds a rally, press conference and lobby day asking the New Hampshire Senate to erase a recently adopted rule that requires a two-thirds vote to hear any resolutions, a rule that is blocking the opportunity to vote on three resolutions that passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support.

Lending unassailable literalness to the title of lobbyist, the event will begin in the lobby of the Legislative Office Building at 33 N. State St. The rally and press conference will take place at 12:30 p.m. The lobby day is scheduled from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. According to those fighting against the rule, who argue it is the first time a supermajority has been required to begin consideration of resolutions approved by the House, asking for a two-thirds vote before hearing any resolution “amounts to closing the doors of representative government to the people.” They’d prefer that door remain ajar. Probably more than a third of the way open, given the circumstances.

If “Hell no, we won’t go” doesn’t fulfill your poetry requirement for the day, consider stopping by Gibson’s Bookstore for the Poetry Society of New Hampshire’s monthly meeting and open mic night. Headliners tonight are Linda Aldrich and Robert Crawford. The event begins at 7 p.m. For more information, visit
