The man whose mother and brother were found hacked to death in Belmont in May has been charged with second-degree murder. Shawn Carter, 31, will be arraigned tomorrow morning in Laconia's district court in connection to the deaths of his mother, 59-year-old Priscilla Carter, and brother, 39-year-old Timothy Carter.

Shawn Carter has been incarcerated on a driving offense since just hours after his relative's bodies were found in the Sunset Drive rental home they all shared. But until now officials have declined to say if he was a suspect.

Shawn Carter was taken into custody shortly after the police issued a "be on the lookout" alert, warning he could be armed and dangerous. He was stopped while driving on Route 3 in Tilton a few hours later and charged with operating without a valid license and violating bail conditions.

Then on June 11 prosecutors charged him with a drug offense dating back more than a year. At Shawn Carter's arraignment on that charge, his appointed lawyer characterized the move as a creative way for officials to keep him incarcerated while they continued their investigation into his family member's deaths.

Since his arrest in May, Carter has been held at the Belknap County jail on a $200 bail.
