Executive Council okays $1 million contract to spruce up State House dome

The State House’s dome is about to get a fresh coat of 23½ karat gold leaf.

The Executive Council yesterday unanimously approved a $1 million contract to repair the state capitol’s dome, including $170,000 for gold to replace the 1993-era gilding that has since worn off in places.

“I know it has to be done,” said Executive Councilor Debora Pignatelli, a Nashua Democrat, during yesterday’s meeting in Plymouth.

The contract with D.L. King & Associates of Nashua includes repairing and repainting the white base of the State House’s dome, regilding the dome and installing spikes to deter pigeons and predator birds from roosting on the building. Work should wrap up by the end of October 2014.

Money for the project was approved by the Legislature in 2011 and this June. The state’s new capital budget also includes $450,000 to replace the roof of the State House Annex building, $101,000 for safety upgrades inside the State House, $300,000 to upgrade elevators in the Legislative Office Building and $1 million for a new electronic voting system in Representatives Hall.
