Drivers can prepay a N.H. trip on E-ZPass

Good news for non-E-ZPass customers: You don’t need a transponder to use E-ZPass on the New Hampshire Turnpike system.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation has announced a new E-ZPass account option that allows drivers to “Prepay a New Hampshire Trip” and use lanes dedicated to E-ZPass and open-road tolling.

The department said under this option, payments are made in advance of a trip on New Hampshire turnpikes by setting up a prepaid account and registering a license plate.

It works best for infrequent users of the turnpikes in New Hampshire and those who may be visiting the state for a period of time.

Images of the license plate traveling through the dedicated E-ZPass lane or open-road tolling lane will be matched to the account. The toll will be automatically deducted from the prepaid account balance.

Drivers would not be getting the 30 percent New Hampshire discount offered to E-ZPass account holders. The tolls would be charged at the full fare.

An account would need to be opened with a minimum balance of $1. Multiple vehicles can be registered on an account.

The department said there is no limit to the number of trips that can be prepaid. Accounts can be automatically replenished by credit card. For more information, go to ezpassnh.com/en/prepay/prepay.shtml.
