Poll: Plurality of N.H. voters blame congressional Republicans for shutdown

A plurality of New Hampshire voters blame congressional Republicans for the 15-day-old shutdown of the federal government, according to a poll released today.

The survey by New England College, taken Oct. 7-9 with a 3 percent margin of error, found 49 percent of registered voters say Republicans in Congress “bear the greatest responsibility” for the shutdown. President Obama was blamed by 30 percent, congressional Democrats were blamed by 4 percent and 16 percent said everyone was equally to blame.

That tracks with the national trend — a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll last week found 53 percent blamed Republicans for the shutdown compared with 31 percent who blamed Obama.

“The NEC poll shows voters lay blame at the feet of Republicans. As we transition into an election year, there has yet to be any sign of a Republican wave of support for the mid-terms,” said Ben Tafoya, the poll’s director, in a news release.

The NEC poll also tested support among New Hampshire voters for:

∎ Obamacare: 58 percent said they strongly or somewhat support it, versus 38 percent who strongly or somewhat oppose it.

∎ Obama himself: 55 percent said they approve of the job he’s doing, versus 42 percent who disapprove.

∎ U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen: 56 approve of the job she’s doing, versus 33 percent who disapprove.

∎ Gov. Maggie Hassan: 58 percent approve of the job she’s doing, versus 25 percent who disapprove.

∎ The tea party: 40 percent approve of the political movement, versus 49 percent who disapprove.

Wow, a poll taken by liberal leaning pollsters showing that citizens agree with and support liberal positions. That poll proves only that polls are not to be trusted.

If you know how to read the internals of polls you will see something jump right out of the referenced poll - see the internals here: http://www.nec.edu/pdf-files-1/nec-polling/NEC%20Poll%20-%20Oct%202013%20Shutdown.pdf

one should note the absence of the sample size - typical CM reporting

Wonderful. My own alma mater didn't bother to ask me what my view of the situation in Washington is. So much for my Masters from NEC. The fact of the matter is the shutdown was by order of the President. The U.S. House of Representatives, regardless of who controls it, doesn't have the ability or the authority to shut down the government. They DO have the authority to draft and present spending bills to the Senate for approval, or to get feedback to negotiate a bill acceptable to both. The Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate, echoing the instructions of the President, have up to now stated that they will refuse to negotiate on the spending bill. Which means they are refusing to do their Constitutuonal duty. Anyone trying to pin the blame for the shutdown on the House, or the GOP, obviously failed elementary school social studies and displays an appalling ignorance of our Constitution.

You seem to forget that the house and senate have already approved spending of this money. They just don't want to borrow the money or raise taxes to pay for the spending they approved. They are the ones refusing to do their constitutional duty.

Would you be able to give us a link to what the Obama proposal has been in his attempt to be a LEADER

And both House and Senate can change their minds--they can unapprove spending. Neither house has a constitutional duty to spend or raise taxes.

It has already been spent. Understand? I will put it this way, you used your credit card to buy a big screen tv. Been enjoying it for a month and now when the bill come due you decide you are not going to pay it. You are a deadbeat. Get it?

Wow! Masters. We are impressed. Masters in what? Maybe you need a tune-up.

lol...thats not insulting at all. Maybe it was you who spray painted the GOP headquarters.

Well he is not a Master Plumber which you would probably place in higher esteem because a Master Plumber works with his or her hands and breaks a sweat. Maybe you need a tune out?

Actually Itsa, I would definitely place a Master Plumber in very high esteem, since he does something useful. Wonder if your friend with the Masters had any government help in getting loans to go to college or did he do it all by himself like you did since you were 14 years old. He doesn't know much about polls if he thinks the college should have asked everyone who ever went there their opinion. He reminds me of you. He probably introduces himself as, "hi I am Dr. Zinj and I have a Masters."

Someone with a Masters who gets it! WOW! You somehow slipped through the indoctrination police at your college campus. Congratulations are in order. Your points are spot on!

They were spot on if you believe that it's acceptable to hold the government hostage as your latest master plan in the destruction of the ACA. We will pass the bill only if you kill or delay Obamacare. They could not accomplish that with 40+ failed attempts so they tried this and failed. Yes, the President signed the order as the consequence of the GOP led House's inability to address the issue. Hey Doc. glad you beat your asthma. (wink) Obamacare is here just as is Roe Vs. Wade, are we goning to fight that for 40 years too. Why not work together to fix it, or come up with an alternative. Concord Hospital is more like a small city and anyone who has ever been thru the emergency room for needed after hours care will tell you... $4000 for an x-ray and 20 minutes of care for a sports sprain is certainly a bit out of line, even if insurance pays it. Free Market just ain't cutting it.

Based on the other poll questions, it's pretty clear liberal made up the majority of those polled...
