Obama’s drug control director to visit Portsmouth

An Obama administration official will address doctors and police agencies in Portsmouth about the rising problem of opiate prescription abuse.

Michael Botticelli is the acting director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. He’ll be the keynote speaker at a special Boston University School of Medicine educational session for New England’s medical community.

The session is jointly sponsored by the New England High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, a federal program to combat drug abuse.

There is widespread recognition that the problem of people abusing prescription pain killers has reached a crisis level. States are taking aggressive steps and Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin made opiate abuse the centerpiece of his State of the State address.

Botticelli will speak Saturday morning at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel.
