Letter: Not too late to sign up
The new year is here, but there are still many New Hampshire residents who haven’t signed up for health care coverage for next year. If you are one of the thousands of residents who have no insurance at all, the deadline most important to you is March 31. That’s the last day of open enrollment in the health insurance marketplace and the deadline for signing up for individual health insurance if you want to avoid a penalty.
For those who are worried they can’t afford health insurance, financial assistance is available if you purchase a plan through the marketplace. If you are still considering going without insurance and paying the penalty, consider this: The money you pay for the penalty gets you nothing, and you will still lack health insurance that protects you from medical bills if you unfortunately are faced with a catastrophic injury or illness.
It’s not too late for the uninsured to get coverage for the majority of 2014. If you have questions about signing up, the state has an official free service, called Covering New Hampshire, that can help you pick a plan and enroll. It’s a new year. Why not start it off right by getting the coverage you need?
