Letter: Radical? Hardly!
Re “On tar sands, Shaheen had it right” (Monitor editorial, Feb. 5):
Kudos to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen for opposing the Keystone pipeline and standing up to the Koch brothers. Those labeling the League of Conservation Voters as some radical group are not up on American history or American culture.
In this struggle, Shaheen plays the part of George Bailey who protects his community from the bitter and selfish Mr. Potter (who if unchecked would make the town unlivable). The League of Conservation Voters are Bert and Ernie, Mr. Gower and all of the ordinary folks looking to raise their families in a safe, family-centered environment.
The only question is what role Sen. Kelly Ayotte would like to play in this classic American story. Americans are hoping that she does not opt to be Mr. Potter’s aide who watches silently as he manipulates matters to send an innocent man to jail, but rather chooses to be Sam Wainright, a loyal colleague who stands up for honesty, the American businessman and American family.
