Letter: Never more divided

Re: “The party of ‘we’ vs. the party of ‘me’ (Monitor Opinion page, Feb. 18):

New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley continues to try to divide versus unite. Barack Obama was supposed to be the great uniter: “We are not a collection of red states and blue states. We are the United States of America.”

Most polls show most Americans have never felt more divided as a nation than we do now. Rich versus poor, black versus white, men versus women, gay versus straight, haves versus have-nots – pick your discriminator. Division, division, division.

President Obama, who often tries to connect himself with John F. Kennedy has somehow turned around what Kennedy said 180 degrees. JFK said: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Great words and concept! Obama has turned that into: Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you.

He said, “If you like your health insurance, you can keep your health insurance, period.” “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor, period.” Never forget this promise obviously a lie) and the people who supported it.

Abraham Lincoln warned: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Mr. Buckley, put down that glass of Kool-Aid and please stop trying to instigate, antagonize and widen the divide. You’re adding no value.

Good letter. The fish rots from the head and when you have a failed leader, the rest of the system fails. When the President threatens that if he can't get what he wants passed Constitutionally, that he has a "pen and a phone" and will act on his own, how can there be anything less than a divide? The president does not call the shots based on his ideology, we the people call those shots. Term limits would go a long way in fixing this problem. Many on both sides of the aisle need to spend 6-8 years and then allow someone else to serve.

A letter doing exactly what the writer is accusing someone else of doing........ Only when the citizens of this country are ready to admit BOTH sides are at fault will anything get better. As long as those politicians in office that refuse to allow compromise are allowed to continue, it will continue. Only when the extremist on BOTH sides see that they will not be reelected will the change start.

I think you make a good point. But I'd add that both parties have a very limited and selective outlook about the problems confronting the nation, ignore both the fundamental failings of our economic system and the power exercised by the oligarchs/kleptocrats who dominate our economy, and the fact we are heading rapidly toward potential environmental catastrophe. Continuing with "business as usual", we are on a course that is unsustainable-- not in the long run, but in the "mid-run"--25 to 50 years. Our reliance on increasingly dirty and difficult to extract sources of fuel--natural gas from fracking, the Canada tar sands, for example--coupled with the mounting evidence that climate changes may be occurring faster than formerly thought, makes much more urgent the need for both honesty on the part of policy-makers and politicians about our present reality, and courage to propose far-sighted and wise solutions. I think our current gridlock and the partisan nastiness it has engendered reflects this underlying fact--a realization that our current ways of dealing with reality are failing, and uncertainty about how to avoid doing more of the same things that got us to this point.

Senate Democrats have not passed a budget in 5 years - The House has sent them a budget each year that they throw in the garbage - Time for a Responsible Republican lead Senate

Wrong again. Budget passed last march. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/23/us-usa-fiscal-budget-idUSBRE92M02D20130323 If your an example of a responsible republican. I'll pass thank you.

think twice about your statement and then please explain to us all why Congress had to recently pass the Ryan Murray Budget
