Letter: Hillsboro needs SB 2
To Hillsboro residents: In March please vote for Article 3 – SB 2.
Why? Because everyone should have a voice. Unfortunately, too many can’t attend town meeting. Some work second shift or have family to care for. Some are out of town on business, wintering elsewhere or attending school. Some don’t drive at night or at all. Attendance at town meeting rarely exceeds a couple hundred voters out of a population of about 6,000. Those of us who do attend meetings all know friends or family who don’t. It is not our place to judge their reasons. All residents deserve to be heard.
Like the traditional town meeting? Believe discussing the issues helps make good decisions? That opportunity will still exist at the first or deliberative session.
Under SB 2 we get the best of both worlds: a meeting to discuss and then everyone having a vote!
Want to research an issue after hearing a point made at the meeting? SB 2 allows time to do so. Currently if a point is raised during discussion, we make a snap decision about it. As a frequent speaker at meetings, I would be presumptuous to expect everyone to accept what I say as gospel. No one is perfect, so a break before the final vote allows time for research or discussion of the issues with people who couldn’t make the meeting or aren’t comfortable speaking in a large venue.
The bottom line: SB 2 will increase the number of us participating in our affairs. It is a win for democracy and a win for Hillsboro.
I also ask for your vote as a candidate for selectman.
