Letter: Cheesy situation
The article “Europe wants its Parmesan back” (Monitor front page, March 12) evokes a lot of emotions on all sides. Since we are a land of natives and immigrants from all over the world, I suggest we celebrate with an “Ameropean” hybrid approach: All cheeses (or indeed products) that our Euro friends claim to be their trademarked names be prefixed with “U.S.-.” Hence, “Parmesan” made in the United States becomes “U.S.-Parmesan.”
As a consumer I would welcome this, because I prefer to buy local or “Made in USA” products anyway.
I find the current labeling confusing because I have to fumble for my glasses to read the small print to find out from where the cheese is from!
