Letter: A very real danger

I am writing to thank Rep. Bill Barber of the House Science, Technology and Energy Committee for his informative column concerning the potential reversal of the Portland/Montreal pipeline to transport tar sands crude oil (bitumen) along this ecologically sensitive land (“Adverse reversal,” Monitor Forum, March 19).

He clearly points out the very real dangers this could present. I urge anyone who has not read his article to please read it thoroughly and carefully.

By assuring that we preserve our state’s and country’s natural beauty, we are protecting our greatest asset. This is beneficial to all people for all times.

Do we want to let large oil companies walk all over us? Or do we want to preserve and protect our land so we and future generations are assured that we will always have land where we can walk and revitalize our inner energy?

Please support this cause. As Barber says, “Let your elected representatives, Secretary of State John Kerry and the president know of your concerns and don’t wait. Without federal intervention, this potential is only a valve turn away from reality.”
