Letter: Shaheen can’t be a fan?

Wow! I just read the NH GOP’s Twitter rant condemning Sen. Jeanne Shaheen for congratulating the Boston Bruins on their playoff win/advancement.

When did our love of New England sports teams become political? I thought this was the last bastion of neutrality in our ridiculously polarized nation.

I have always treasured the camaraderie that comes with bringing my family to a venue in Boston, Manchester or Durham, sitting alongside temporary neighbors from throughout all walks of life, united for a few hours as we collectively root for our home team to beat the Canadiens, Yankees, etc.

Now the New Hampshire GOP claims a stronghold on being a New England sports fan? Really? Maybe they were implying that Shaheen was jumping on the Bruins bandwagon. So what? That’s what people do at playoff time.

I have a friend who is suddenly so enthused about the Bruins that he’s growing a playoff beard, even though he had never seen a hockey game before the Red Wings series started.

That’s what playoff season does – makes fans of us all.

Particularly irksome was this @NHGOP tweet directed at the Senator, “You don’t know the first thing about hockey.” What are they implying – a woman doesn’t know hockey? That’s what I take away from it.

If the worst thing about Shaheen is that she’s a Bruins fan, I’d say that means she’s doing a pretty spectacular job. I wish that our sports allegiances were the worst in all of us. Go Bruins! Go Sox!

The fact that shaheen does not know the first thing about hockey has nothing to do with the fact she's a woman.. and everything to do with the fact she does not know the first thing about hockey.
