Letter: A Brit lit companion

When I read that Barbara Bonsignore likes British detective stories (Sunday Monitor, June 29), as I do, I decided to suggest a book that I used to check out from the city library and have now purchased called Bum Bags and Fanny Packs by Jeremy Smith.

It’s a dictionary of British/American lingo and helps considerably when reading modern British literature. It would have saved much confusion and misunderstanding if it had been available for an American GI in Britain. He, when saying goodnight to a British girl, might be told to his shock and dismay, “knock me up some time,” which meant, of course, “ring me up or give me a call!” It’s a good reference, especially for those of us who enjoy British authors!
