Letter: Havenstein can’t be trusted to stand up for women’s rights
If one thing is clear to me about Walt Havenstein, it’s that he can’t be trusted on women’s health issues.
Shortly after entering the race for governor, Havenstein admitted that he supports restrictions on a woman’s right to choose.
Since then, he’s only reinforced that he can’t be trusted to stand up for women. Not only did Havenstein announce that he opposes buffer zone measures that would ensure women can access reproductive health facilities safely, but he also celebrated the Hobby Lobby decision that limits women’s access to contraception at her employer’s discretion – a decision that allows a woman’s boss to come between her and her doctor.
Like many Granite Staters, including Gov. Maggie Hassan, I was deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision in the Hobby Lobby case, which says discrimination against women is still acceptable in this country. But that’s all the more reason we can’t give up now.
More than ever, our state needs a governor who will stand up for a woman’s right to make her own health decisions – and it couldn’t be more clear that person is Maggie Hassan and not Walt Havenstein.
