Letter: Teach your children to be kind to animals

Thanks to Barbara Bonsignore for her eloquent letter concerning the rights of animals used for entertainment and other purposes.

Before you dismiss this letter as being from just another animal rights fanatic, please consider this: There is a direct link between how people treat their animals and how they treat people in society. This is important to note.

Animal abuse goes way beyond being an animal problem.

Mahatma Ghandi once was quoted as saying, “The way a nation can be judged is by the way it treats its animals.”

I agree with Barbara that wild, healthy, capable animals should be allowed to live in a natural environment. But as long as profit is involved, I’m not sure that it is possible.

Please, teach your children to be open-minded concerning animals. Children’s lives are so enriched when they appreciate the animals around them.
