Letter: Tone deaf at Market Basket
I’m not a regular customer of Market Basket (I’m not a regular customer of any store, really), but I can’t help but stand behind the employees that are fighting to preserve the culture that they hold dear to them.
Since last week, the board of directors, led by the seemingly never smiling Arthur S. Demoulas, has been in a battle with employees over the firing of Arthur T. Demoulas as CEO of the company.
The hiring of the two new CEOs, who seem to be from companies that have failed or been downsized, seemed to signal a leadership that was getting ready to sell the company at any cost.
Their only demand has been to reinstate Arthur T. as CEO, which is unprecedented. Aren’t we supposed to hate CEOs? This whole thing has been one big PR disaster for the Arthur S. side, with those hearing the story siding against him. In this fight, I’m siding with the employees.
The tone deafness of the Market Basket board of directors is telling on where their priorities are on this matter. They aren’t for the employees or the customers, and they need to bring back their old CEO. It’s the only way that this is going to go away.
