Letter: Ayotte protecting businesses

As the owner of NobleSpirit, a small business selling collectible coins and stamps online, I am thankful that Sen. Kelly Ayotte wants to protect New Hampshire’s small businesses by preventing us from being victims of burdensome internet sales tax legislation.

I run my business out of one physical location in Pittsfield. However, proposed legislation would force me to comply with tax laws thousands of miles away. Adhering to laws for up to 45 states would be so complex and time-consuming I could not compete with big retailers such as Wal-Mart or Target.

I am very proud of the leadership demonstrated by Ayotte, and I hope that she continues to fight for businesses like mine.

Congress should follow her lead and reject legislation that would hamper growth among small businesses operating online.

New Hampshire’s small businesses – whether they are on “Main Street” or online – have always served as an engine for economic growth, and we should not be subjected to public policies that would harm us.
