Letter: Take the money and leave
As so many do, I miss Market Basket. But though I miss it, I will honor the boycott. It is important to remember what precipitated the current situation – the removal of Arthur T. Demoulas as CEO.
Market Basket has a motto – “More For Your Dollar.” When I first visited the Storrs Street Market Basket back in 2007 and saw the motto emblazoned there, I remember thinking, “I hope that the store lives up to its motto.” It does.
At least, under the leadership of Arthur T. Demoulas it did. In economic times like these, the Market Basket chain is more important than ever. It is because of Arthur T. and those who support him that this motto is not just empty words.
The actions of the cabal that threw out Arthur T. do not look remotely benevolent – the firing of personnel for what appear to be purely political reasons, followed by threats to fire more. This was recently followed by a transparently self-serving offer to Arthur T. to rehire him as a powerless figurehead, which Arthur T. wisely rejected.
It is fairly obvious to me that the current cabal is utterly contemptuous of Arthur T., as well as the entire Market Basket management, employee force and customer base.
Before they do more harm, they should accept the very fair offer made by Arthur T. and take the money to invest in some other enterprise – something other than food, and far, far away.
