Letter: Vote for me, Hopkinton

For 12 years, Contoocook has been my home. I graduated from high school here in 2006. I was married here last year. I am running for selectman because I want to ensure Hopkinton continues to be the kind of town I want to live and raise a family in; that it’s a community where my husband and I, and other young families, can afford to live.

Hopkinton has opened so many doors to me, and I want to continue giving back to the community. I have participated in service-learning trips to Central America, covered town government as a local reporter, served as an original board member of Shared Gifts, and substitute taught at our local schools. Since 2011, I have served on the Hopkinton Recycling Committee, and last spring I spearheaded the first townwide trash pick-up event for Earth Day.

I am a candidate for a M.A. in creative writing at Dartmouth College and work in policy and communications for a local nonprofit.

I benefited from the important investments Hopkinton has made to educate our town’s youth. For young adults to be able to work in town after graduation or to come back to Hopkinton after they finish college, we will need to attract new clean businesses that offer good-paying jobs and will need affordable housing options. We also should encourage residents to buy local and keep money in our community. We should promote current businesses and work to bring more local farming, restaurants, shops and services to town. We must plan for the future of our town while working to preserve its bountiful history.

If you agree that the board of selectmen, and our town, would benefit from a fresh, energetic female perspective, I hope you’ll vote for me on Tuesday.
