Letter: In these cases, guns helped
Recently Robert A. Stein complained about assault weapons (“Gun violence unabated,” Monitor letter, March 11).
Well, Mr. Stein, a few facts. No assault weapons have been sold in America since the 1934 National Firearms Act without exhaustive federal permits. Assault weapons by definition are multiple select fire weapons, usually including full auto, burst mode and single fire. All the “assault weapons” liberals are protesting about are just look-alike, fake semi-auto or single fire (one trigger pull, one round fired) rifles. True AR 15 assault rifles are not available to the public, and not one of the recent mass murders used a full auto weapon.
Show me one case where law-abiding, armed citizens were gathered and a shooting broke out where the armed citizens shot each other instead of the shooter. I see just the opposite:
∎ In 2007, at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., Jeanne Assam, a female off-duty security guard, took out a gunman and saves hundreds of lives.
∎ In 2012, in Long Beach, Calif., an employee opened fire on his boss. A passerby pulled his gun and killed the shooter.
∎ In 2013 at an Atlanta middle school, an armed officer in the school disarmed a teen who open fired and hit a student in the neck.
∎ In 2013 a women’s basketball coach from Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School in Detroit shot two men who attacked him as he was walking two female basketball players to their cars in the school parking lot.
