Letter: Important story
I’d like to thank Annmarie Timmins for sharing the story of her mental illness (“One of the 26 percent,” Sunday Monitor Viewpoints, March 17.)
Many people with a mental health diagnosis are reluctant to seek help due to the stigma of mental illness verses physical illness. It is very unfair that those who do seek help have to wait for treatment that is often less than adequate due to the overburdened system of care. If a patient with life-threatening physical symptoms had to wait days for treatment, there would be an uproar. Yet a patient in a mental health crisis can also be in a frightening, life-threatening situation. Hopefully, the Concord Monitor series and Timmins’s story will contribute to our moving ahead to improve services for people with mental illness.
